Sweeties Trail Ride
Mom On The Trail

July 14, 2005 - This morning I got a frantic call from Christy, my
friend and President of
Another Chance for Horses, a rescue in
Bernville PA.

I was packing for our up coming week-long camping trip when
the phone rang.  "Mel I NEED HELP!"   I was alarmed by the
sound of Christys voice.

"Mel, I just got a call from a horse dealer we work with.  He said one
of his clients had a mare that had a foal on the
trail while being ridden... and if we can't take her she will go to the
killer sale up here in PA!  We need help now and I
don't have the money to purchase her back from the stable!!!"

My response was simply, "bring her here.  I am going to be out of
town and I can't pick her up but if you can get
her here my volunteers will take care of her and raise funds for her
purchase..."  Oh my gosh!  At that point I ran to the computer to
put out a bulletin to our volunteer group to let them know we had this
horse coming in and we need to raise money
for her purchase and vet care. Our group of dedicated volunteers has
never let us down! We received a check from
our local girl scout troop 3034 that is helping us put together our cook
book for fundraising.  We received a second
check from our great friend and neighbor Barbra Lynn to help with the
costs of taking in these and other needy
horses.

Sweetie arrived safe and sound with her cute-as-a-button filly
Saturday July 16th.  We eventually learned that
Sweetie is a registered Standardbred. She arrived in appalling
condition.  She could not chew her grain unless the
pellets were wet down, and she was over 200 lbs underweight.  But
she was sweet as pie and a fantastic mother.  I
am sure she was well broke to ride and drive but would take many
months of care before I'd even think of trying to
ride her or hook her to a cart.

The location of the riding stable has been kept private, as they don't
want to be harassed about the condition of their
horses. We have no idea where this outfit is located and we never
will. Sadly, this place will continue to do "business
as usual".

We named the spunky filly Happy Trails (Happy for short!) and she is
a real beauty.  Both Sweetie and Happy Trails
found caring new homes, thanks to new owners who come to us with
wonderful offers of adoption.
